This March, we are highlighting Twyla Carter. Twyla Carter is the first Black woman and Asian American to be Attorney-in-Chief and CEO in The Legal Aid Society's 148-year history. She has devoted her entire career to public-interest work and has led Legal Aid in defending New York City’s Right to Shelter and protecting the incarcerated from conditions at Rikers Island.

Carter was recently added to the inaugural list of Nonprofit Power Players by PoliticsNY and NYMetro, which highlights leaders championing causes from accessible education to affordable housing and everywhere in between. These leaders and their organizations work at the intersection of public policy, finance, administration, and progress to build a more equitable and engaged New York.

Before working for Legal Aid, she was a senior staff attorney for the ACLU’s Criminal Law Reform Project and the Misdemeanor Practice Director and staff attorney for the Kings County Department of Public Defense in Seattle, Washington.
